The IDA Home FAQ is basically a list of "use Ghidra, use Ghidra, why would anyone ever buy this, use Ghidra, use Ghidra". Who do they think their target audience is? Who wants to pay a $365/y subscription for *one* arch, no SDK, no decompiler, non-commercial use only? What?pic.twitter.com/6gies0XNtR

I know that there are people who cannot tell the difference between IDA and other tools. It is perfectly understandable that they would prefer free solutions (if the result is the same, why pay?) Our tools are used by the elite, as someone put it.

FWIW, I've been using IDA for over 15 years and there's a 0% chance I'd buy IDA Home. I have the IDA interface in my muscle memory, but that license is laughably bad. Ghidra and Hopper may not be as good as IDA, but I'm moving over to them fully.

I stopped renewing my IDA Pro license last year (good riddance; every time there was *some* complaint about the payment method). Sure, it takes a while to get used to a new app, but the bang per buck of IDA is just laughably bad, especially given the competition.

It's been a while since I had one that wasn't purchased by work. I remember trying to throw $10k+ at them for a personal Hex-Rays license and an upgrade on my Advanced copy that had lapsed, and being (essentially) told to piss off.

My first interaction with them was an email from @ilfak himself, literally "Please explain.", because my country and IP didn't match. He had me send him a scan of my Japanese resident card, because clearly I must be trying to scam them out of VAT and not just traveling.

Why us? Not us, but the government. We must pay VAT if it turns out that the purchase was subject to it.

Doesn't mean you need to treat your customers like criminals and ask for proof of residence based on an IP address (and rudely, at that).

I've literally never heard of a company checking for vat exemption that hard. Holy fuck.

Guessing: It might be a company that got stung for VAT evasion before, or whose executive previously ran a company that got stung. Remember what Al Capone eventually got convicted for.
