If you open your computer's case, it is already vulnerable to hacking, because no consumer x86 computer is secure under that threat model. Yes, this is another bullshit hyped attack with minimal practical consequence because under their threat model you are already pwned.https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/1259669698494509056 …

Opening the computer's case is only possible method. The second just requires getting access to a victim device and cloning its identity. Can be done in under 5 mins; no unscrewing of the victim's laptop required. See 3.1.1 and 3.1.3 in the report. https://thunderspy.io/assets/reports/breaking-thunderbolt-security-bjorn-ruytenberg-20200417.pdf …

How exactly is "we can clone the identity of a trusted device by disassembling it and then do what the device was trusted to do" news again? Yes, if my friend has a copy of my keys and you break into his house, steal them, make a copy, you can come into my house. Duh?

The key question is not if you or I think this is an issue, but that Intel does and claims cloning should not be possible: "Cryptographic authentication..to help prevent a peripheral device to be spoofed to masquerade as an 'approved' device to the user" https://thunderbolttechnology.net/security/Thunderbolt%203%20and%20Security.pdf …

That statement makes no mention of the threat model, which is clearly intended to be "through the TB port" here, not "opening the case and dumping flash". There is literally no way to implement this is an absolutely secure way against all attackers. The intent was clear.

Threat model is on page 1: "..there is security protection with Thunderbolt 3 that prevents unauthorized Thunderbol PCIe-based devices from connecting without user authorization." Key here is that our research shows that claim is false and gives users a false sense of security.

I agree with your statement "There is literally no way to implement this is an absolutely secure way against all attackers", but that disclaimer should have been mentioned explicitly in Intel's whitepaper, and they did quite the opposite.

What you quoted isn't a threat model. It's saying the security does something, not under what conditions / limitations. Those would be the threat model.

That's as good as a threat model description we get, unfortunately. I'm just saying that if any conditions are so severely limiting the claims in that document, I think it would only be fair to your customers if you state them explicitly - and that's what's missing here.

Isn't this the data that intel is providing it's customers so they can come up with their own threat models? If not, where is the data from intel that informs your threat model?
