If you open your computer's case, it is already vulnerable to hacking, because no consumer x86 computer is secure under that threat model. Yes, this is another bullshit hyped attack with minimal practical consequence because under their threat model you are already pwned.https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/1259669698494509056 …

A newly-found vulnerability in thunderbolt ports could leave any PC built before 2019 open to hacking—even if the machine is asleep or locked. https://wired.trib.al/OEOsP3W

If your attack relies on soldering wires to a flash chip and/or getting root access to the computer, you are hereby banned from the news media.

@yifanlu Soldering wires is only one of three possible avenues for one exploitation scenario (section 3.3 in the report). The other two methods, and the remaining 8 exploitation scenarios, all do not require any soldering.

SOIC clips only work for laptops where the flash chip is a SOIC, and either way qualify as "soldering" for the purposes of this argument. Do any of your attacks work without disassembling the case of either the victim system or a trusted device?

honestly they don't even work that well on SOIC flashes. certainly not in five minutes. I mean, you've tried using them, right?

I haven't, I solder wires. I don't need more failure modes in my experiments. And besides, SOIC is so damn trivial to solder to.
