I've heard those digital out cables were proprietary and thus 3rd party ones couldn't be produced. That's why they're like $300+ online.

Everything about every console is proprietary and third parties still make third party reverse engineered products. Nobody cloned the digital AV cable because nobody cared. The protocol is simple and open source converters exist.https://github.com/ikorb/gcvideo

I didn't articulate well. I was referring to the custom chip within the cable, not just "proprietary cables". But yeah, I guess they've already figured that out. Ok, thanks.

Yes, it has a custom chip, so it's not cost effective to implement with off the shelf chips (FPGAs), nor is it worth making your own custom chip, which is probably why no third party ever made one. It's not a problem of not having documentation. It's a niche product.
