Google Translate is a useful tool as long as you're aware of its limitations. I use it all the time, but you need a good sense of what it can handle and what it can't, and how to interpret what it spits out.

I use an English/Japanese dictionary, preexisting knowledge, and http://deepl.com (translation tool). The translation tool is used to fix sentence structure and kanji, plus it seems to get a more natural sounding outcome than google translate. It's has limits but it helps.
