God, for a time, I worked at a shitty colo, and they had a fuckton of servers built with consumer motherboards; anyway, you could tell which machines were windows vs Linux from whether the toslink port was lit up or not

Whether the thing is lit or not just depends on the state of the S/PDIF output switch in the audio codec mixer settings, which is probably different for the different OSes/drivers.
