OBS is open source so someone smart can make a branch and change it, right?
OBS already supports libfdk_aac, but I assume they don't ship it by default on Windows due to its questionable licensing. There is no other good open source AAC encoder as far as I know.
Can we fix that?
If anyone cares about licensing what are they doing anywhere near h264 and aac at all? Apple related codecs are hives of scum and trollery.
Licensing is different from patent issues in this case. The problem with fdk is a "straightforward" copyright license. (And unfortunately, Apple devices aiui still can't do anything else. Sigh.)
How hard would it be for open source projects like this to “just” link to platform specific libraries? Surely macOS, Linux and Windows have decent AAC codecs built in? Honest question. Handbrake lets you chose CoreAudio AAC in macOS for example.
