So, some months ago I bought a set of fake candles to put into a candle holder. They just ran out of batteries, and I decided to see what's inside (non destructively). And the answer is "not much". I guess the small 8SOIC is the micro.pic.twitter.com/7vdI09Foll

SOIC 8 micro, what looks like a crystal, the LED itself, and an IR receiver/decoder. And a single SMD capacitor. The LED cathode is connected to pin 6, the IR receiver at pin 4. The xtal between 2 and 3. It matches the pinout of a PIC12F510.

So, uh, if I wanted to figure out if I can dump this as a PIC — what's the tool I need? Buspirate? An UART? An SPI? An AdaFruit Feather M4?

Poking @marcan42 who probably knows, or point me in the general direction of someone with more clue than me (which is easy.)

I guess https://github.com/WallaceIT/picberry … says it would work on a BeagleBoard. Which I have somewhere in a drawer, maybe it's time to take it out and make good use of it.

If there's no marking on the IC and it hasn't been obviously scratched off, I think you're being too optimistic assuming it's a PIC. Many micros in that package have the same pinout. More likely it's some Chinese thing.

Yeah but there's still a chance it uses the same cloned ISP protocol, no? Worth a try at least.

I'm not aware of Chinese micros cloning the PIC ISP protocol. Because it sucks. Like, they have dozens of ISP variants. You need to know what PIC you're connecting to. Some subsets return their own ID, but you need to know the general variant. It's horrible.

Then I guess I might have to try a few and see if I get lucky. But yeah sounds like Microchip ISP options are ... Suboptimal. If I can get something out great. If not it doesn't really matter much. For what I have in mind I don't really need more than my Birch Wood actuator.

The official Microchip programming software ships with a (multi megabyte IIRC) database of every chip it can talk to, what specs it has, and scripts in a custom bytecode VM to implement the protocol for that group of related PICs.

I think if I end up making a finalized version of my Birch Books controller, I'll try to see if the STC89 is available as smd, and if so add in a cp2012 or similar so I don't even need the ISP header.
