      Loooool this is the exact opposite of the "I will nickel and dime you for as long as you live" pricing model. As much as I'd love to give away *all* of the probes at-cost, I need funds to cover the costs of future R&D - but I don't want to make it out of reach to students.

      The problem with a one-time discount is that I have to take the buyer's word that they're not a commercial user. While this is easy to check with students (.edu email) it's a lot harder for a private hobbyist.

      The goal here is to create enough of a hassle/legal risk that a company will just pay the higher price, without being unduly imposing on hobbyists. Could one cheat and use it for consulting etc? Sure, although they'd risk getting sued if I found out.

      100% compliance isn't going to be practical, but I expect any legitimate business to be risk-averse enough that they'll pay the higher price.

      The commercial edition will also include pluses like traceable calibration that businesses normally need or strongly desire, but are of little use to a random guy in a basement.

      Hypothetical scenario: can I pay the hobbyist price for personal use, and then if a consulting project comes along that needs it, upgrade on demand? Conversely: if >1y passes before I have a commercial use case, can I morally use it for commercial purposes without an upgrade?

          Yes, and yes. I'm not trying to handicap people excessively. The goal is to put these probes in the hands of as many people as I can in a financially viable manner, while also being profitable enough to subsidize R&D of future projects.
