At least in my circles this is deeply part of the culture. I don't think anyone would take offense if someone who *does* have the means spends that much, but certainly nobody is going to laugh at anyone for not doing so, out of choice or necessity!

I don’t think I’ve seen people really get shamed for it, per se. Usually it seems to start with more of a tone of “you’re cheaping out on something vital and you’ll regret it”.
