Is there a particular reason they're being confused by the Japanese text? I mean, this seems a pretty significant deviation
Casual/slangy Japanese is full of context-sensitive contractions and abbreviations that machine translation has no hope of ever getting right without being actually intelligent.
Ah, so it's like how someone in English might say that something's "The bomb" to say it's awesome, and it getting interpreted into "The explosive device" in a different language then?
Yes, except worse, because Japanese has no spaces (so you can't even tell a priori where words start and end) and words are routinely shortened into even more ambiguous versions. Perhaps more like saying "dabom" or so.
