Any recommendations for a self-hosted dropbox-like service: simple bi-directional file sharing with an external party, ideally with per-interaction link generation giving access to a drop directory. No cloudy cloud, please.

Yes, the Nextcloud file drop¹ functionality seems to fulfil most criteria but it looks like I need a complete Nextcloud install for just a subset. I'm wondering if there is anything "lighter". __ ¹https://nextcloud.com/file-drop/
NextCloud is ultimately "just" a random PHP webapp, so it's not really much more trouble than anything else that might still need a database. Now if you have an aversion to the idea of a big pile of PHP, I get you.

Nextcloud is very modular, you can remove most apps and just keep the file sharing functionality.
