That's a pretty useful bug report as far as it goes; there's a lot in what's been ruled out, and some clear pointers what to look at to make it reliably repro on demand. I enjoy these when it's a paying gig, customer is Concerned, and it's not my fault!

I dealt with an extremely similar bug, but on Windows, and with an HTC Vive. It was some interaction between Windows 7, an Nvidia Pascal GPU, and SteamVR. For some reason, that combination crashes randomly.

I reformatted to a completely fresh OS on a completely different drive in a different machine, and could still reliably reproduce the problem. Freaked me out.

I wonder if both mice use the same driver? I’ve had lots of entertaining experiences with usb chips and drivers.

Had similar issues, after switching to Wayland human interface devices via USB started to behave normal.
