Another one for the "professional/commercial software is unprofessional" list: Apple messed up chroma siting in either Final Cut Pro X or their H.264 encoder. Direct H.264 exports are visibly offset; exporting to ProRes 4444 and then ffmpeg/x264 yields correct output.

Oh, by the way, x264 also produced a file *10 times smaller*. With much better visual quality.

That sounds pretty extreme, I’m not a FCP user nor familiar with it, but is it perhaps hardware vs software encoding? I remember QuickSync being absolutely terrible, producing worse video quality at larger files versus software encoding.

Not sure. This video is mostly static and thus very compressible; I get the feeling Apple's encoder doesn't even try to figure that out.
