An explicit part of my job description is helping get more of our security work into the public
I think some of the Googlers with FOSS in their job description forget that it's not like that for everyone too easily (e.g. tytso's reply on HN)

I was also told before hire that basically anything I submit for review would be approved (other than trying to IARC kernel code)

So yeah not everyone's experience. However, patches to any existing external code base are now very low effort (zero effort if it's on github)
