Since we're talking about Google being less than nice towards its workers, here's a fun little story from my days there. There were two things that I really didn't like about Google at the time: The Google+ saga (realnames et al), and the IP ownership policy.

This is why I am glad I do not work at a large organisation like Google. This sounds painful and terrible. The fact Google can just claim ownership over something under vague pretence grinds my gears, especially projects created prior to being hired.

With respect to open source projects, this may involve claiming the ownership of contributions made by other people (not involved with the company at all) as well, does it? Is this really possible?

They don't claim ownership over whole projects, or over things you did in your last. They just claim ownership over any work *you* do while employed.
