my absolute favorite thing is when you boot a debian/ubuntu system and you need to immediately install something with apt or a wrapper and it's like "NOPE, CAN'T! AUTOUDPATE RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND"

People turn on auto updates? Actually, people use Ubuntu?

Little-mentioned nice thing about Gentoo: emerge uses fine-grained locking, you can run multiple instances at once and they won't step on each other.

I mention this every time someone gets me going about Gentoo. My prediction 2 years ago that it'll be my primary OS in 2027, 20 years after my first install, is still looking great.

My current install is something like 14 years old now. Haven't reinstalled ever since I switched to 64bit. It's gone through 5 machines.

I've stopped using gentoo around december last year after 15 years. In the end I've had nearly identical, in terms of /etc/portage contents, systems on both laptop and desktop, but some packages were failing to compile on one, that didn't on the other, unrelated to differences.

I actually have a buildhost that makes binary packages weekly for 3 chroots: one /etc/portage config for all my servers (8 currently), one for my workstation/laptop, and one for my HTPC.
