my absolute favorite thing is when you boot a debian/ubuntu system and you need to immediately install something with apt or a wrapper and it's like "NOPE, CAN'T! AUTOUDPATE RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND"

I mention this every time someone gets me going about Gentoo. My prediction 2 years ago that it'll be my primary OS in 2027, 20 years after my first install, is still looking great.
-
My current install is something like 14 years old now. Haven't reinstalled ever since I switched to 64bit. It's gone through 5 machines.

gentoo has a bad rap but portage is easily the best package manager, both in terms of functionality and maintenance, and it’s held that title for over a decade
-
Its main problems IMO are the horrendously slow dependency solver (especially for complex installs), though it is easily the most *powerful* one out there, and the slow-ish install times even for binary pkgs. Pretty sure those can be sped up, I keep meaning to investigate.

The automatic ubuntu updates will probably finish before your gentoo package compiles though! Joking, but at the same time not really; installed a gentoo prefix a couple days ago, and compiling gcc took so much time that I'm never getting back.
-
I build my own Gentoo binary packages on a cronjob, so I don't really wait for compiles (and if I'm installing something new, the buildbox has 32 threads so...)
