      The instrument doesn't matter *that* much to start though, as long as it's not a toy and it's in tune. More importantly, what do you want to play?

      Personally I just... started playing songs I liked. Mostly by ear, a few I actually tried reading the sheet music (or the MIDI chart). I only started properly studying music theory semi-recently.
