My washing machine's motor controller does an interesting thing between 15kHz and 16kHz as it changes the spin speed. #UltrasoundInAirpic.twitter.com/kmlAcjPHA1

I know, but a lot of people can't hear it and make devices that produce noise at those frequencies, sometimes at ear-damage levels. The hashtag is intended to cover near ultrasound too.

Just the switching frequency? It will be louder when changing speeds due to higher torque.

Look at those sidebands spreading out as the speed changes though. It's both amplitude *and* frequency modulated. I'm guessing an inverter with 3-phase AC output, internally switching at a fixed frequency and changing the AC output frequency.

Please reverse engineer a bunch of washing machines, because honestly this is where we need to install our own software stacks. Mine has bugs and sucks feature wise. Mechanically it's fine.

I know a lad that did this on his. Put an Arduino in it. It only has one mode, and you press water level down button to run the cycle. But it works

Likely noise control. Get the power down via PWM at those rotation speeds that match the resonance frequency of the washing machine chassis.

New twitter accound idea: EMI/EMC offenders. Name and shame any company finding unnecessary to respect EMI/EMC standards when designing their products.
