Obviously a stateless protocol (that transmits full current state, not just buttons=mutations) is superior. Most are stateful though, but it seems Odelic brand ones are stateless (state is computed and maintained on the remote and transmitted idempotently)

No, you can infer it from how the remote works and how it behaves when you press buttons while blocking IR and then unblock it. Stateless protocols will jump to the new target state, stateful ones will just ignore the button presses while blocked.
