"pager" is a generic term for "automated notification system". It's a common term in the IT industry. These days it's usually an app or just a phone call (or both, for redundancy), or possibly SMS or whatever else.

"Carrying a pager" just means you're on some kind of on-call rotation. I carry a pager for my personal systems (using Pushover) and work stuff (using PagerDuty with fallback to phone calls). Physically it's just my normal Android phone.
