the USB4 spec just dropped. I thought it would include TBT3 by reference, but no, they took great care to explain the absolute minimum possible of TBT3, just saying that unspecified "compatibility" is providedpic.twitter.com/FhTOQRw9fl
If it ain't broke, I'll fix it!

USB4 itself includes another PCIe encapsulation (unrelated to TBT) that on the first glance looks (a) reasonable and (b) straightforward to implement, which is good I am also glad to see that ACS is mandatorypic.twitter.com/6lPFf5vHDV
overall, the USB4 architecture is unsurprising so far, as it's exactly what I expected to see looking at recent patents several months ago; it's now a very generic transport layer interface with pluggable protocols (USB 3, DP, PCIe defined so far, probably more to come)pic.twitter.com/4iNFoySMgw
like TBT3, USB4 relies on a complex MPLS-like routing scheme where the host controller explicitly directs the packets down a particular path. the driver support for this for TBT3 is abysmal (hardcoded paths...), but maybe that will change for USB4pic.twitter.com/OdjGemcw9g
I have absolutely no idea how a stack of this complexity and with this amount of backward compatibility requirements is going to work reliably with the very variable PC platform, but hey, let's be optimistic for now
oh and one last thing. USB 2 and USB 3 were already completely separate by the time USB 3 came out, but the USB 3 spec still had some pretense they're related. USB4 drops that; there is 1 (one) normative sentence mentioning USB 2 that I can see in the entire spec
At least USB3 and USB2 and USB1 had the same data/programming model (with increasing extensions). USB4 is finally something new-ish.
