Someone tried PCIe on the Raspberry Pi 4 already. Yes, the wiring job is horrible, and yes, of course it works, as I've said many times. Go hack on PCIe already, it's easier than you think. Do you know why he needed to remove the phy instead of just tombstoning the DC blocking caps on the lanes?

Because the USB controller would be useless anyway, and he wanted to reuse the physical USB 3.0 port for PCIe (since Chinese PCIe risers already do that).
