Bought 5 FTDI Basic clone at $1.1 each. Pretty sure it is using fake FT232RL. Anyway to verify?pic.twitter.com/OlqdqepAV0

I think at this price you can just know? Differences are in EEPROM write behaviour and that the bit-bang clocking works correctly on the clone. Don't know of an out of box test except for win drivers. https://mobile.twitter.com/marcan42/status/525194603746426881 … https://mobile.twitter.com/marcan42/status/695292366639378433 … (H/t @marcan42 for all the RE)

FTDI FT232RL vs. clone, bitbang mode, 38kHz square wave. CH1 is the original, CH2 is the clone. Oh, the irony. pic.twitter.com/QiqLxYfxIi

I have some FT232 chip purchased way before fake was surfaced. Supposedly I can swap them in. Should be cheaper than I spin a new PCB for this.

Try this: https://marcan.st/transf/ftdi_clone_tool.py … It'll detect clones, and also fix them if they're bricked by windows drivers. At least clones from that time; for all I know they've since fixed the EEPROM behavior to look genuine.

I received some samples. @marcan42's utility detect them as genuine (or better clone). All units had serial number as 00000000. FT Prog is able to reprogram the chip. Silkscreen shows they are from different batch. Maybe leftovers?pic.twitter.com/K1dhmnJsyM

Those visually look genuine, though of course it's hard to guarantee. Genuine units, however, ought to ship with real serial numbers AFAIK, so that's a red flag. Could be better clones.

Well the EEPROM content looks like this. I need to replace it with a genuine blank chip to compare.pic.twitter.com/HacF96dr2z

it's possible that these were programmed with an all-zero serial (e.g. someone didn't bother with serial generation but still flashed them). The ALYNJEB4 at the end looks like it could be a factory serial (outside the descriptor area)?

Yes this looks like the factory FTDIChip-ID. I can verify that each board has a different number. It’s probably bit challenging for fake chip to implement it during manufacturing.
