FWIW closing my eyes is not required; I can just mentally shift my attention to whatever I'm trying to imagine and ignore visual input. Imagining things that aren't there superimposed on reality is harder. That feels kind of like a faint wireframe on top of a photo.

I tried and failed to do this constantly while experimenting with meditation as a kid, so I naturally assumed no-one could and people just mean meditating on a concept rather than an actual mental image. My only similar experience then had been fever hallucinations I got once
