Look carefully at https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/MG2040-D.PDF … vs https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/ESD7008-D.PDF … and tell me how those aren't the *same exact chip* being sold with two different pinout diagrams with different pins marked as NC. Ha.

Could it be a binning thing? Taking defective parts and "converting" them into a lower-grade thing?

Both chips fully specify all the diodes, so there is no binning to be had. The only difference is that one of them documents the common connection. That's not a thing that fails.
