Look carefully at https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/MG2040-D.PDF … vs https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/ESD7008-D.PDF … and tell me how those aren't the *same exact chip* being sold with two different pinout diagrams with different pins marked as NC. Ha.

"All pins labeled “N/C” should have no electrical connection" because they aren't actually NC, ha. Sneaky.

Update: confirmed, it's true. They really are identical.https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/1123093928553541632 …

Just confirmed that the MG2040 and the ESD7008 are the same device sold under two different datasheets. The "NC" pins of the ESD7007 are really the common GND of the MG2040 and measure as such. The pentagonal pads of the MG2040 are a lie, they're both square. Lol @onsemi. pic.twitter.com/U4UsDunXZJ

I think Intel i860 or i960 did the same thing for commercial vs defense variants

They report having different clamping voltages and capacitances, one has noisier curves, and one has a completely different behavior in the negative TLP I-V curve. Also one has square pads on the bottom while the other has pentagonal. Clearly very similar, but not identical chips

My guess: The MG2040 was made to be a drop-in replacement for the ESD7008 in HDMI applications and allowing slop that doesn't matter for USB/Thunderbolt use since HDMI doesn't need such high bandwidth in the reverse direction.
