Argh, SystemRescueCD ditched their Gentoo base for Arch linux and regressed on some things I really liked in the process, like the FAT32-based USB install and the default zsh with a nice config :(

It also seems to have ballooned in size, from ~580MB to ~910MB. Wonder what the bloat is.

You can have a backing store for customizations... but you need to change the bootloader config... but it's an ISO so you can't... and the alternate FAT32 installation method is UEFI-only... something wasn't well thought out here. http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/manual/Creating_a_backing_store/ …

Never ran into an issue a little fdisk/parted couldn’t fix with filling empty space with fat32 — unless they did something funky and made the whole drive zfs.

Don't know SystemRescueCD, but at least with stock Arch, you can just copy the files from their ISO to a plain FAT32-formatted USB stick and boot in UEFI mode without any problem whatsoever. Just make sure the FAT32 partition label is the same as the one of the ISO image.

I had no problems adapting the new ISO to my old FAT32 USB drive, and assuming the layout doesn't change in the future, updating will just require me to copy the new files.

(and that's with me keeping syslinux as both BIOS and UEFI bootloader)
