oh god, you know something is up when this happens and they clearly even said in their last tweet it indeed has to do with ghidra. The issue is you still have the full price when you come OUT of unis so even then it's a bit weird.

Not weird at all. They give it to you for free while in uni, so that you learn to work with it, and then buy a license out of convenience ("don't want to relearn a tool") when you leave uni.

Microsoft built their empire on mediocre software pushed thru educational institutions. Cannot blame Hex Rays for trying the same approach with cutting edge software.

impressed and depressed it took *the bloody NSA* to bring RE technology into the (late) 90s but I am excited for more reasonable competition and opensource experiments in this area I could even see myself integrating with ghidra, in ways that weren't worth it/possible with IDA!

(fwiw, if anyone has neat custom analysis ideas/needs and a budget, I'd be glad to work on RE tools for a change :D)
