My mouse is very much a USB 2.0 *low-speed 1.5mbps* device. This is how it has always worked! That is not to say that USB-IF's approach isn't a confusing mess, especially with the speed names (LS/FS/HS/SS/SS+)... but it's been a *consistent* confusing mess from the very start.pic.twitter.com/NE9sBg9STQ
@DrPizza, might want to amend the article? I mean you're right it's confusing, but it's not new or different from what USB-IF have been doing until now.
Anyone who has spent 2 minutes with a micro controllers data sheet would have come across it. Many micro controllers have USB blocks that support LS/FS only but are very much USB2.0
I think the confusion stems from *host controllers*. I think a USB X.0 compliant host controller is actually required to support all speeds for that version. Same for hubs. But devices can use whatever they want.
That's not a problem because a mouse can't meaningfully use more bandwidth than that. It becomes a problem when such things are allowed to affect hosts and cables. If your motherboard has a USB 2.0 port, you can plug any USB 2.0 device into it with any USB 2.0 cable, and it works
Same with 3.0. But with 3.1, lots of 3.1 devices just don't work even with USB 3.1 hosts and cables, because those things were no longer required to be interoperable.
