Insanity in a standards body part #2487: USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 are being merged in to USB 3.2 wherby USB 3.0 was actually rebranded USB 3.1 Gen 1 now will be USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 will be 2x as fast but hey, there is also a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 for quad speed. Obviously.

This isn't actually new; USB 2.0 never meant "high speed" either. You can have a USB 2.0 device that runs at Low or Full speed (the speeds from USB 1.1). Versions add features and speeds but do not *require* them, you can still use the older ones.

To be honest I had more of an issue with the ridiculously complex naming scheme compared to, say, Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3.

Oh yeah, it's ridiculous, I'm just saying it's been ridiculous from the start :-) HDMI has kind of the same problem too, with all the stupid versions and options with different minimum cable specs.
