...uh, tb3 is also frustrating iirc, largely because all the existing infrastructure for it is polluted with usb-c/usb-pd stuff. Also, pcie has the same security issues as usb, which would be good to solve. @whitequark has some thoughts on tb3 etc iirc.

Pcie spec involves relatively robust link training so that it's safely independent of the physical medium. As a result, it's capable of running over just about anything that's conductive.
