So here's a question for you all. Why the hell do textbook descriptions of a 1-bit output ΔΣ modulator show stuff like the first image, when the second image produces *literally identical output* and is way easier to understand?pic.twitter.com/ri3RrFXZok

One is the mathematical description, one is the implementation. Delta-Sigma systems can exist purely in theoretical space and if that's the case then you can't make certain reduction assumptions. It can be frustrating, but I actually prefer learning this way.

Although they did put terms like DAC and register in the mathier system description so fuck me tbh. That honestly makes it much worse. Bad textbook.

Was gonna say I like learning things in terms of complex theory first and then making things simpler via practical assumptions, but this is adding complexity where it's not needed, so idk. I've never seen a textbook graphic quite that frustrating.

This is from an appnote. The problem is it's *not* a mathematical description. It's a completely ridiculous implementation of the mathematical description in the dumbest possible way. https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slyt076/slyt076.pdf …

Like if you're going to *derive* sigma-delta and explain how it works and why, sure, use the mathematical model. But if you're going to just say "this is how you do it" then don't, and *especially* don't cook up a terribad implementation from it and present it as gospel.

Like I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the fuck was going on until I realized (after looking at other resources) that the bottom box is a *negation* in their implementation.
