Dug out my little Helium-Neon laser. This cute little thing puts out only 1.2mW, but it's a beautifully clean Gaussian beam and very pretty to look at! Takes a mean >1kV to light up this tube.pic.twitter.com/1b1bjo7aG5

capacitive rotation sensor?
I believe these use LED/photodiode sensors with a rotating vane; all the Chinese ones I've seen are that style.

That's what I tried to replicate 15 years ago for that high school project I got this laser for, but I didn't know what I was doing and I got terrible performance :P
