Dug out my little Helium-Neon laser. This cute little thing puts out only 1.2mW, but it's a beautifully clean Gaussian beam and very pretty to look at! Takes a mean >1kV to light up this tube.pic.twitter.com/1b1bjo7aG5

Actaully, I'm wondering if your galvos are open loop or feedback.
Feedback. You can't get this kind of performance open-loop as far as I know.

I believe these use LED/photodiode sensors with a rotating vane; all the Chinese ones I've seen are that style.
