What controller is this using though? IIRC HD44780 only allows up to 8 user-defined graphic characters. Another controller or some kind of clever sync hackery?

Exactly my question... How many custom character do you have/use? If more than 8 then what is the trick. (Not mentioning the fact that there is an FPGA behind this impressive project)

yay, it's my too. Also the refresh rate seem to be somewhat higher than hd44780 can support, so I bet some dark magic behind that

It is the WS0010 from
@adafruit: https://www.adafruit.com/product/823 Datasheet says 800 KHz for the enable clock; the iCE40 FPGA is driving it at 6 MHz in 8-bit mode, writing 160 bytes directly into the DDRAM (mode 8'b00011111). Planning on custom characters and PWM this weekend...pic.twitter.com/S45I0u1Yi4
