Well, regardless of exploitability, this attitude just destroyed any confidence I had in VLC's updater being secure. Seriously, WTF. https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/21737 …

I stopped using VLC years ago once it was clear they had no interest in fixing their surround sound issues. Since I use Windows on my media PC, a friend recommended PotPlayer (http://potplayer.daum.net ) and I’ve been happy ever since. Not sure how it handles updates though…

Update story aside, if you want a quality first-choice video player, pick something from this list: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/wiki/Applications-using-mpv …

Better yet: mpv itself, no frontend ;-)

I mean these *are* Windows users we're talking about here :P

To be correct about things, MPV (without a front end) operates just fine on Windows. Maybe there are front ends, I dunno. Default is perfectly usable.

Of course, I just tend not to recommend plain mpv to Windows users because I fully expect the first question to be "where's the File menu?!".

Haha! To be fair though, the way modern programs mould their UI around tablet use... I'm not even sure MS office has a file menu any more x'D
