I *hope* other filesystems don't do this nonsense. Good thing I'm getting rid of XFS. I used to think it was a good filesystem, but this behavior is reason enough for me to never use it again for anything serious.

A simple drop_caches fixes the massive latency spikes on allocation (until the page cache grows to use all free RAM again, of course). This is obviously broken. Ugh.

apfs did this on my laptop too when I deleted a very large chunk of files a few days ago, the entire system just froze and latency went sky high

I can't seem to find where you reported your concerns to the XFS developers on the public mailing list. Did you?

I didn't, but someone else found it at the same time and filed a bug referencing the tweet and ultimately nothing was done
