At least I get a shiny souvenir out of it. As far as I know this is the first unprovoked head crash of an HDD I own.pic.twitter.com/BY3JevRvuD

Since it's now a display piece, let's take some macro photos of the head stackpic.twitter.com/tGtGEltlz0

Looks like it uses piezo actuators for fine positioning?pic.twitter.com/rmot8gVNrV

Huh, neat. I wouldnt have been surprised by piezo buzzers for vibration cancellation, but I had never thought about the need for vertical positioning. It makes sense, though.

AFAIK they're not used for that. In high-performance drives, they are used to achieve more precise track positioning than the voice coil positioner, and to provide faster seeks within a very limited range of the voice coil position.

Possibly needed in all drives with track density beyond a certain limit? I don't know.

What I'm wondering is if they have per-head positioning now, what's stopping them from using all heads in parallel for throughput? As long as the piezo has a range >= the long-term/thermal mechanical stability of the rest of the system it should work, right?

AFAICT that should be viable. Possibly the drives don't currently have electronics for independent per head 2nd stage positioner drive, and for simultaneous servo tracking for multiple heads. That should just be a small matter of more logic in the ASIC and more piezo drivers.
