well that sucks. My server crashed and the data is gone. I have backups so i only lost a little data, but these things were supposed to be MORE reliable, not less. I wonder if its a controller failure exacerbated by the extra drives i added.

Oh the NAS is a homemade hack-job from my old editing computer repurposed as a NAS with software based RAID. If its anyone's fault its mine. It's been running for 6 years so it's reasonably reliable. This is only the second major screw up in that time.
The problem with RAID is that it works to save your data when hardware *stops working* but if hardware malfunctions and corrupts data it won't help you. Sometimes you can do some deep surgery and fix it... I saved myself from a major Linux md-raid malfunction (hw caused) that way

Yep. No matter how you stripe it, RAID isn't a backup. It's protection from needing your backup. I've been pretty lucky. I've had drives fail, but everything is RAID6, the arrays email me if a drive fails, and every array has an unpowered spare for quick recovery.

Not sure where i said RAID was a backup. I just find it annoying that this became less reliable with more drives.
