Can we take a moment to admire the massive clusterfuck that is the SFF-8639/U.2 connector? Pick your interface: * SATA over S0 * SAS x2 over S0/S1 * PCIe x2 over S0/S1 (SATA Express) * PCIe x4 over PExx0-3 (U.2) * SAS x4 over S0/S1/PExx1/PExx2 * A mix! http://pinoutguide.com/HD/U.2_SATA_connector_pinout.shtml …

Ah but there's a *new* 3.3V power pin in the gap between the SATA power/data pins, apparently for SMBus, along with *another* PCIe refclk besides the one SATA Express added, for dual-port usage. Yes this thing has SMBus too, why do you ask?

about those 3.3v pins: they're why you need to use kapton tape to shuck a 10TB WD drive out of an easystore external https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/collateral/tech-brief/tech-brief-western-digital-power-disable-pin.pdf …

Why the fuck did they not define that pin as active-low with pull-up and avoid that whole compatibility snafu?

I still remember that forensics case where we got a SATA SSD that required 3.3V (or something like that).

The cool thing about following
@marcan42 tweets is that it gives me an idea of what it’s like for other people to hear me talking about modular synths and stuff.https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/1064784058322808832 …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
