Allow me to summarize x86 side channel attacks: Spectre v1: speculation is insecure by design Spectre v2: secure branch prediction matters Meltdown: Intel are dumbasses L1TF: Intel are monumental, inexcusable dumbasses PortSmash: hyperthreading is insecure by design

I like de Raadt’s comment about x86 from 2007 - pretty prescient, really. “You've seen something on the shelf, and it has all sorts of pretty colours, and you've bought it.”

One of the reasons there's still a Netra T2000 in my rack.

Curious how far back you have to go (in x86 processor generations) to hit a window of CPUs not impacted by these flaws. Looking for that sweet spot after the Pentium FDIV bug and before these speculation flaws.

Get a pre-2013 Atom. Those don't do speculation. Otherwise you have to go to the original Pentium, since speculation was introduced with the Pentium Pro.

Yeah, when Spectre/Meltdown first hit, I sniffed around for whether my G4 was impacted and the upshot was that the G4 was but the G3 wasn't. Fortunately, it's a lab machine, not a vital internet-facing server, so I'm not overly worried on that one.

Sweet! I've got a Dell Mini9 (Atom N270, 2008) running FreeBSD and a Mini10 (Atom Z520, 2009) running OpenBSD. Yet more reasons to appreciate these little netbooks. ☺

Alternatively, I have about 40 extra Sun Netra X1s (UltraSPARC IIe) in my basement with 4GB of industrial flash that run OpenBSD and pf pretty well. Just two FE ports, though.
