So, putting the blowtorch to the chip on a brick outside should combust a layer of epoxy. Moving in circles around the die location (in the middle), I get the nice candle-like flame.

Once the yellow flames disappear it then gets dunked into water immediately - this induces a thermal shock around the die. The spent epoxy then just rubs off in water by fingerstrength. After two runs of this, the legs gave enough purchase to break off the majority of the epoxy

To finish off, I used a scalpel dragged backwards over the die, and then some IPA and a cottonbud to clean off the remaining epoxy. So, here is the result on a slide... You can see the die is fully exposed! o/

This decap was done with the exact same method, except instead of a blowtorch I used a gas range, and instead of thinking about flames I just cooked the thing until I was pretty sure the epoxy had sufficiently decomposed. Dunk then scrape scrape scrape.https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/1013072621460549633 …

Very nice! :D What do you use for the lighting in the first photo? I'm going to reconfigure the extant microscope in the hackspace :P

There's a ring light around the objective, and I may have used some random flashlight on the side to get more interesting contrast on top.
