      It’s not a BOM - it’s a ZWNBSP. It’s a valid character and only a BOM if it’s at the beginning. As the actual bytes. It certainly is never a BOM if & encoded or encoded in any other form than the bytes defined as BOM.

      U+FEFF is deprecated in favor of U+2060 when not a BOM. It is not &-encoded; that's Chrome being useful and making it explicit in the dev tools. The character comes back as a UTF-8 BOM (EF BB BF) in the JSON request for the comments. It's a BOM, in a stupid place.pic.twitter.com/jj0YXmRu4k

      U+2060 is only the new preferred word joiner, U+FEFF is still ZWNBSP: http://ftp.unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/UnicodeData.txt … It’s only BOM if it’s the UTF-8/16/32 bytes at start. But since the actual bytes are in here rather than & encoded, I now agree it’s most likely a template with a BOM being concatenated.

      Note that it will always be named "ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE" in the data files due to the stability policy: https://www.unicode.org/policies/stability_policy.html … That has no bearing whatsoever on whether it is currently deprecated for the (originally) named use or not.pic.twitter.com/3RHFQA5T3q

      Good point. But at the same time also means it will always be a ZWNBSP, just not the preferred word joiner ;). I don’t think rejecting U+FEFF in the middle of the string will ever be a valid behavior. So it will always be valid, just not preferred.

      Just because something is technically valid due to backwards compatibility reasons doesn't mean we don't get to mock people who use it against best practice and most likely due to a bug ;)

          Sure. It’s just that specs are violated so much that something that is actually still within spec and causes no harm seems… boring, at least to me ;). OpenSSL’s ASN.1 DER parser ignoring every single MUST NOT of the spec - now that is something I make fun of ;).
