And yes this is a cheap controller with no cache, but that's no excuse for that abysmal and not even consistent linear write performance. I'm sure there's some stupid underlying pathological cause for this, but I don't care. Software RAID works without any of this nonsense.

It doesn't matter. Same exact hardware setup, hardware RAID is crap, software RAID (on top of the same hardware RAID controller, but in JBOD mode) works.
Weird. Guess I'll be sticking to software RAID for my NAS.
