Current thinking is this 'evil' chip intercepts SPI flash. The board shown on the bloomberg article shows an unpopulated SOIC-8 attached to the SPI bus. Why make it tiny? Why not just build an ASIC that's an SOIC-8 and use the unpopulated footprint?
Honestly, they'd be better off building it into the actual SPI flash package itself. Plenty of space inside the plastic, and then all you need to do is swap the parts, no need to touch the motherboard.
