Somehow that worked. The compound element is now mostly back together without gunk inside (there used to be a very visible mottled film that scattered light on the inner surface).pic.twitter.com/MMYY8S5YBu

Given the fact that there was gunk inside and how it came apart once I removed the rim, I'm pretty sure this piece wasn't hermetic to begin with.
