Looks like my Nexus 5X died. Again. Looks like time for some heroic last-ditch efforts (like hot air) to get the data out via ADB, otherwise I'm popping off the eMMC and dumping it that way. At least this time I have a backup of the raw dm-crypt volume key.

Uh. My nexus 5X died last month. Does this wipe the phone back to factory? Because using it to retrieve some non-backed files is tempting.
No, iff your phone is already OEM unlocked. You do need to flash it though (fastboot boot does not work, it can't derive the decryption key that way, you need to flash the patched recovery/boot image).
I can recommend @oneplus , I am using the Oneplus 3 since around 2 years now and it's still working and getting updates
