If you've ever wondered how Tokyo gets good cell reception, the answer is lots of base stations. everywhere. This one is on top of my building. Making an educated guess from the labeling, it covers at most an area of about 300m x 300m, probably less.pic.twitter.com/WLdRugfHvS

How vulnerable are these to tampering (disregarding what will happen to you after getting v&, just from a technical perspective)?

Good question. Physically, there is zero security - no locks whatsoever (that are actually locked) between outdoors and those boxes. I'm not sure if the boxes themselves are locked, but I can trivially access the fiber uplink line (and hypothetically passive tap it, NSA style).

Technically, no idea! It would be fun to try to break into one of these systems, see if it's possible to do undetected and maybe sniff or tamper with communications. I would *hope* modern 4G systems do end-to-end security betwen SIM and telco, but I'm not holding my breath.

I seem to recall having read some, but IIRC most of them were cursory reverse engineering and breaking into root shells rather than doing anything more nefarious. Presumably also due to fear of being v& ?

Also people teld to be a bit more wary of publishing the bigger flaws, when it comes to telco/interception stories. Plus testing usually involves breaking radio regulations.

Hmm, it'd be fun to get an EU femtocell and test it in the US using the ham radio band overlap "feature" (unfortunately does not work the other way around).

Here's a good overview of just how broken and pwnable femtocell systems (and networks) are: http://femto.sec.t-labs.tu-berlin.de/dokuwiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=bh2011_slides.pdf …

True, but who solders a coax connector into their phone? More typically I've seen people just connect dummy loads instead of antennas and just put things close enough that they work anyway.
